Adi Suanjaya "Kencut", I Putu

(b. Badung, Bali, 1994)

Educated at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Indonesian Arts Institute, in Yogyakarta, I Putu Adi Suanjaya "Kencut" is a young artist from Bali famous for his buttonhole puppet figures. Through bold colors and lines, he presents a world of parody through his figures as a form of human reflection today. Kencut presents the subject of doll-shaped creatures with buttons that are presented in the form of paintings, sculptures and installations. It has a characteristic emphasis on contrasting colors and line strength.

The characters in Kencut's works are presented like dolls but are actually representations of humans and their lives. These inanimate puppets show a fragment scene of human life that contains a reflection on the current human situation. He has many solo exhibitions, among others: at Artotel Gajah Mada Semarang in 2020 and at Artotel Sanur in 2019. He has also participated in group exhibitions: including the Intention Please!b exhibition at Edwin Gallery, Jakarta 2020, 2019 Salon at Langgeng Art Foundation Yogyakarta, and Celebration of the Future, ABBC Building, 2019 and Art Jakarta, Rachel Gallery, 2018.


Agus "Baqul" Purnomo

(b. Kendal, C. Java, 1975)

Agus "Baqul" Purnomo graduated from the Indonesian Institute of Art, Yogyakarta

He has participated in many competitions, among others: Jakarta Art Award (Finalist), International Print & Drawing Biennale, Taiwan (Finalist), Nokia Art Award Jakarta, 1997 (Finalist); The best watercolor of The Fine Art Faculty of ISI Yogyakarta, 1997. (b. Lampung, S. Sumatra, 1975)

He has participated in many group exhibitions; including: 10 Perupa Muda Chandra Metro, Lampung, 1996; 5 Artists, Velona Gallery Jakarta, 1999; Untuk Kemanusiaan, WTC Jakarta 2001; Jakarta,2003; Tiga Perupa Jakarta, Margo City Depok, 2007; Genta Dalam Warna, Suroboyo Art Centre, 2008; Melangkah Pasti, Hotel Sahid Jaya, Jakarta, 2009. He had solo exhibition Tembang Sunyi, Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Jakarta, 2016.

He also won an award; when he became the Winner of the Kosgoro Central Lampung Anniversary Painting Competition, in 1994.


Arie Smit

(Zaandam, The Netherlands, 1916 - Denpasar, 2016)

Arie Smit trained at the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam, and arrived in Indonesia in 1938, as a soldier in the Dutch Colonial Army. He obtained his Indonesian citizenship in 1951. From 1950-1956 he taught painting at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). In 1956 he moved to Bali, and he lived and painted there ever since. He has had solo exhibitions in Bandung, Jakarta, Palembang, Balikpapan, Singapore, and Honolulu, U.S.A. In 1992, he received a Gold Medal Dharma Kusuma Award from the Balinese provincial government for his contributions to the development of Balinese painting.


Arkiv Vilmansa

(b. Jakarta, 1979)

After obtaining his bachelor's degree in Architecture from Parahyangan University in 2005, Arkiv Vilmansa began his artistic journey in 2010 and had his first solo exhibition in Jakarta, Indonesia. He has had many exhibitions overseas including at Mae Gallery, Tokyo, Japan; Young Art Taipei Group Show, Taipei, Taiwan and Vivi Yip ArtRoom, Jakarta, Indonesia.


Atjin Tisna, I Wayan

(Padangtegal, Gianyar, Bali 1942)

I Wayan Atjin Tisna learned painting from Anank Agung Gede Raka Turas (1917-1996) and Dewa Ketut Rungun (1992-1986) before studying at the Pendidikan Guru Sekolah Lanjutan Pertama (PGSLP, Teachers Vocational Secondary School) and Universitas Udayana in Denpasar. he taught art at public junior high school in Ubud, Bali. Tisna also studied color and composition from Arie Smit (born in 1916) and was greatly influenced by the figure paintings of Donald Friend (Australian, 1915-1989) His works have been shown in exhibitions : Argyle Art Center (Sydney, Australian), Singapore Art Museum, 1994.


Awiki

(b. Surabaya, E. Java, 1961)

From the age of twelve, Awiki studied with the painter Bani Amora in Genteng, Banyuwangi, and later under Sucipto. He continued his studies at the Fine Art High School (SMSR/SSRI) in Yogyakarta before moving to Bali in 1980. He joined the Sanggar Pejeng, a studio known for its realism, under the guidance of the painter Dullah from 1980-1982. He has had several solo exhibitions and has participated in group exhibitions throughout Indonesia.


Eddie Hara

Eddie Hara currently lives and works in Switzerland. Erica Hestu Wahyuni

(b. Yogyakarta, 1971)

Erica started to study painting while she was still in primary school. She joined the Sanggar Katamsi, a children's drawing club, where she studied under Suharto P.R and Herry Wibowo. From 1989-1996 she studied at the Indonesian Art Institute (Institut Seni Indonesia/ISI), Yogyakarta. She received the award for Best Work at the 9th Dies Natalis ISI Yogyakarta in 1993. She has held solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta and Jakarta, and has participated in group exhibitions in Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Japan and Russia.


Fadjar Sidik

(Surabaya, E. Java, 1930 - 2004)

Fadjar Sidik learned to paint in Sanggar Pelukis Rakyat during the early 1950's. He continued his studies at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia/ASRI) Yogyakarta, where he also held the positions of Head Painting Department and Assistant Director. From 1957-1961 he stayed in Bali, forming good friendships with Alimin, Widodo, and O.H Supono. He has been awarded Anugerah Seni as Contemporary Painters from the local government of Yogyakarta.


Faizal

(b. Solo, C. Java, 1965)

He graduated from high school in Solo, Central Java and continued to study at the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta. He participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Amsterdam, France and Singapore. He achieved several awards, best sketch in 1990, best artwork in 1990, and Medaille du Conseil Generale Prix D'honneur L Duren from France in 1991.


Fantje, I

(Mojoagung, E. Java, 1931-2002)

I Fantze studied in Jakarta and Europe. In 1948, he was asked by the Indian Society in Indonesia to paint a portrait of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1962, he embarked on a study tour of Europe. In 1967, he followed another study tour in South East Asia and Japan for Exhibitions and Fine Art. He has held several exhibitions in the region. I Fantze typically paints still-lifes.


Gunarsa, Nyoman

(Klungkung, Bali, 1944 - Bali, 2017)

Nyoman Gunarsa is a graduate of the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, where he was also a lecturer for many years. In 1970, he was one of the co-founders of Sanggar Dewata Indonesia. He has received multiple awards since the 1960s, including the Pratisara Affandi Adhi Karya from STSRI "ASRI" Yogyakarta; Best Painting Award at the Indonesian Painting Biennial in 1978 and 1980; Lempad Prize awarded by the Governor of Bali. Gunarsa has participated in dozens of exhibitions throughout Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, U.S.A, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy. He was one of the invited artists at the Art of Bali exhibitions, the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1998. He established the Museum of Contemporary Indonesian Painting in Yogyakarta in 1989, and the Museum of Classical Balinese Painting in Klungkung in 1994. His expressionistic style feature offerings, dancers, and wayang (puppets).


Hanafi

(b. Purworejo, C. Java, 1960)

Hanafi graduated from the Indonesian School of Fine Art, Yogyakarta, in 1979. He has participated in several exhibitions, since 1992. He has participated in exhibitions such as Movement, the Fine Arts Museum, Jakarta, Biennale IX, Artist of the Three Cities, and the Philip Morris Art Awards Exhibition in Jakarta and Bali. He has held a number of solo shows at the Galeri Puzzle, at the Deutsche Bank, and Galeri Canna (Jakarta), as well as at the Komaneka Gallery in Ubud, Bali.


Hardja, W

(b. Surabaya, E. Java, 1946)

He completed his education in Law while he also majored in Fine Arts at IKIP Surabaya . He learnt painting from his friends, senior painters from Surabaya, Indra and Rustamadji. In 1969 he moved to Bali and became a painter.


Januri

(b. Tuban, E. Java, 1977)

He has received numerous awards among others: Ranked Top Three in the Nokia Art Awards, 2001; Semifinalist for the Philip Morris Art Award, 2000; Semifinalist for the Philip Morris Art Award, 1998. He has participated in many group exhibitions among others: On Women, the Moom Gallery, Jakarta; Human Republic, Mien Gallery, Yogyakarta; Re-kreasi, H. Jap Hian Tjay

(Surakarta, C. Java, 1927)

He studied art at Voobeeldende Kusten Academy in Rotterdam & Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 1950-1957. He was known as the pupil of Siauw Tik Kwie, who painted consistently and maintained his excellent quality. His works were collected by collectors in Indonesia, Vietnam, Polandia and abroad.


Jeihan Sukmantara

(Solo, C. Java, 1938 - Bandung, W. Java, 2019)

In 1953-1955 Jeihan Sukmantara studied painting at HBS/Himpunan Budaya Surakarta under the guidance of Sumitro Hendronoto. From 1960-1966, he studied painting at ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology). He has had solo exhibitions in Jakarta, Bandung, Solo and Surabaya in Indonesia, Rome (Italy) and Paris (France). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Indonesia, United States of America, Algeria, the Netherlands and Switzerland. In 1978, he established the Studio Seni Rupa Bandung (Bandung Fine Arts Studio) with Dr. Sudjoko.


Lotra, I Wayan

(Balinese, 20th century)

Lotra is a self-taught Balinese artist who paints in an academic style. His artistic style has been greatly influenced by Rudolph Bonnet and Willem G. Hofker. Lotra worked mainly in crayon on paper, mostly painting female figures. Lotra's oeuvre can be described as belonging to a modern Balinese artist.


Luddy Astaghis

(b. Malang, E. Java, 1976)

He has participated in exhibitions since 1996 until now. He has also several solo exhibitions among others; Knock Out, City Work, Jakarta, 2009; Sense of Life, The Javanese Museum of Cultural Arts, Ullen Sentalu, Yogyakarta, 2004. The visuals are in the form of dolls with cartoon character and made of cloth, paper, dacron, etc. and has an expression that reflects a cheerful, happy, sad, sad, humorous/humorous and even satirical atmosphere.

In his solo exhibition, Luddy Astaghis raised the theme of bakulan because the world of bakul is very close to everyday life. Luddy and his wife are the perpetrators (bakul). When someone goes through the profession as a bakul (seller), there are a lot of people who demand everything, so they as the bakul must be disciplined, they must be polite, must be wise, must be brave, and they must be firm.


Rusli

(Medan, N. Sumatra, 1916 - 2005)

From 1932 to 1938, Rusli lived in India where he studied painting, philosophy, and literature at Santiniketan University. Rusli has spent the majority of his life in Yogyakarta. He was a teacher at Taman Siswa (1945-49), and Head of the Art Department for the Military School of the Department of Defence and Security during the Indonesian Revolution. He was a lecturer at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia/ASRI), Yogyakarta, from 1951-1956. His works were exhibited at the second Biennial Exhibition in Sao Paolo, Brazil, in 1953. He had solo exhibitions in The Hague (1954), Amsterdam and at the Palazzo Brabcacio, Rome (1955). He has had numerous solo exhibitions in Jakarta, though also participated in group exhibitions in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Denpasar. He was awarded the Arts Award by the Government of Yogyakarta, the Adam Malik Award in 1986, and the Hamengkubuwono IX Award in 2002. He is the founder of the Rusli Museum in Yogyakarta.


Snel, Han

(Scheveningen, The Netherlands, 1925 - 1998)

Snel originally trained at a graphic arts academy in The Hague. He went to Indonesia in 1946 as a soldier, and again in 1949, after Holland acknowledged Indonesia's Independence when he applied for political asylum. Snel lived in Bali from 1950 to 1998. He fell in love with his favorite artistic model, Ni Made Siti, and they married in 1958. He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 1965, then in Jakarta in 1962. He has actively participated in various exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad.


Srihadi Soedarsono

(b. Solo, C. Java, 1931)

During the revolution, Srihadi Soedarsono fought in the Student's Army and was a member of SIM/Young Indonesian artists. In 1953, Srihadi enrolled in the Bandung Institute of Technology/ITB. There, he was influenced by the Cubist-inspired style of his Dutch teacher, Ries Mulder. In 1959, he graduated from ITB. He went on to pursue his master's degree at Ohio State University in the United States where he studied from 1960-1962 on a Fulbright grant. His sojourn overseas influenced him to experiment with pure abstraction in the 1960s, but he ultimately returned to figuration. By the early 1970s he had developed a meditative semi-abstract style with broad sweeps of pure colours. In 1980, he returned to Ohio State University under a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship for a research program. Srihadi has taught at and chaired the art department in ITB and the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (Institut Kesenian Jakarta/IKJ). He has received many art and achievement awards in Indonesia and overseas. Since 1945, he has held numerous solo exhibitions in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, China, Japan, India, Taipei, Korea, Australia, Bahrain, U.S.A, Brazil, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland.


Sriyanto

(b. Cepu, C. Java, 1937 - Jakarta, 2019)

Sriyanto is a former banker and essentially a self-taught artist. He did not have the opportunity to enjoy a formal education in painting, not was he taught with the guidance of established painters. He merely had the art education he found in basic schooling, and the painter friends he made in his youth in Surabaya. He joined a painter's club called Prabangkara, which enabled him to participate in exhibitions with senior painters in his region. In Jakarta, he became a member of the Indonesian Watercolor Society (Perkumpulan Pelukis Cat Air Indonesia) and has showcased his works alongside senior watercolor painters of Indonesia, China and South Korea. Sriyanto's daily activities are mainly occupied with painting, drawing, and sketching.


Sunaryo

(b. Banyumas, C. Java, 1943)

Sunaryo, painter and sculptor, graduated from the Department of Art at the Bandung Institute of Technology/ITB in 1969. He became a lecturer there in 1970, head of the Sculpture Department from 1976 to 1980, and Chairman of Art at ITB from 1988. Sunaryo studied sculpture, specifically the techniques of carving and sculpting marble, in Carrara, Italy, in 1975. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions world-wide. UNESCO and the International association of Art in Paris, France awarded him a Silver Medal for Graphic Design in 1978. In 1998, he founded the Selasar Sunaryo museum/gallery in Bandung.


Syahrizal Pahlevi

(b. Palembang, S. Sumatra, 1965)

Syahrizal Pahlevi studied at the University of Indonesia's School of Literature, the German Department, after which he studied at Yogyakarta's Institute Seni Indonesia. He contributed his cartoons to newspapers and magazines. He joined Sangkar Sangkerta Yogyakarta, and was an active member in theater and poetry. He was additionally the founder of Bengkel Graphic Yogyakarta. He participated in numerous exhibitions, such as Yogyakarta's Biennial in 1999.


Vendy Methodos

(b. Bantul, Yogyakarta, 1982)

He is a street artist, and he does what he loves. He has been painting in the street, around Jogja and Klaten, Central Java, Indonesia. Vendy Methodos arguably works very political.

He received an award as a Finalist at UOB Painting of The Year 2017. Widayat

(Kutoarjo, C. Java, 1919 - Jakarta, 2002)

Widayat began his artistic career by painting picturesque landscapes in the Mooi Indie tradition for the tourist market of Bandung. During the Revolution he was an officer in the Indonesian armed forces, involved in intelligence work in South Sumatra. His war-time activities included making anti-Dutch propaganda posters and organising dramatic performances to drum up nationalist fervour. Widayat was among the first batch of students at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia/ASRI),Yogyakarta. He graduated from ASRI in 1954, and then became a lecturer there, remaining a staff member until he retired in 1988. He co-founded the artist group PIM / Young Indonesian Painters in 1952. In 1960, he went to Japan for two years where he studied traditional gardens and ceramics. The Indonesian Government presented him with the Anugerah Seni Art Award in 1972. Other awards received include First Prize at the First Indonesian Biennial in 1974; an award at the Yogyakarta Biennial in 1986; Lempard Prize awarded by Sanggar Dewata Indonesia in 1987; the ASEAN Art Award in 1993; and the Budaya Upa Pradana from the Government of Central Java in 1994.


Yogie Achmad Ginanjar

(b. Bandung, W. Java, 1981)

He graduated from the Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology, majoring in Painting.
