Dear art enthusiasts and collectors,

Preparing our Collectibles auction is quite a big and complicated job, especially as we deal with so many varieties of items, requiring significant knowledge about each: furniture and hanging lamps, chests and boxes, ceramics, sculpture and decorative items, tea and dinner sets, and many more, from various parts of the world. Also, sometimes batik, songket and ikat. Financially, it is the least rewarding, but we continue to hold the Collectibles auction as it gives us a glimpse into people’s collecting habits and lifestyles, and we love sharing this with you. Unfortunately, as profitability becomes more and more the determining factor of the sustainability of our auctions, we do not know how much longer we will be able to continue our Collectibles auctions.

In the last few years, however, the secondhand market has become more and more accessible, with people favouring exchange or sale of their goods through dedicated channels like auctions. In 2018, Barneby’s sales of furniture and furnishings increased by 32% compared to previous years. Apparently, people in the under-45 age group, an age at which many people buy and furnish their first home, are becoming more and more aware that high-quality object made by hand can be acquired at prices considerably lower than new factory manufactured pieces of furniture. New generations choose to purchase used items with particular attention to craftsmanship and durability, taking into account the environmental impact of the origin of their purchases.

Keeping this in mind, we have little choice but to be more selective in vetting the lots we feature. Therefore, we selected 144 lots from twelve collections which we will present in two sessions.

The first session, offering lots #001 - 114, will be held on Sunday, 3 November 2019 at Galeri Nusantara, Kompleks Eksekutif Paradise no. 2, Jl P. Antasari, Cilandak Timur, Jakarta. It features various items, including colonial furniture and hanging lamps, silverware, Chinese, Japanese, and Sawankhalok ceramics, Chinese sculpture, as well as collections of batik with parang, garuda and animal motifs.

The second session, offering lots #201 - 230, will be auctioned prior to the Fine Art lots that will be offered on Sunday 17 November 2019 at the Aria Ballroom of The Tribrata, Jl. Darmawangsa Raya, Jakarta. It features a selection of the best pieces of ceramics, batiks, sculpture, tea sets, as well as Chinese and colonial furniture from the collections we vetted for our Collectibles auction.

A total of 144 lots will be auctioned in Sessions I and II of our Collectibles auction this year. We invite you to participate in the auctions and also come to view and inspect the items that are offered on the viewing dates before the auction. Hopefully our strategy will yield results that will allow us to continue holding our Collectibles auctions for many more years to come. Be that as it may, I hope that one day the success of auctions will no longer be determined by the profitability they generate, but rather by the quality of the social interactions and the communities they build or the level of impact they bring to our living environment.

Happy viewing and joyful bidding! Let’s build communities and preserve our environments!
