Welcome back to Sidharta Auctioneer’s Fine Arts Auction.
As an auction house, we always try our best to nd art pieces that can connect with you and your interests in art, in one way or another. We believe that it is our duty to contribute our share towards the development of knowledge and appreciation about Indonesian art, which we try to actualize through our selection of art works. In this auction, you will nd works that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also rich with art historical and historical signi cance.
Firstly, we would like to honor the recent 72nd anniversary of the Indonesian Air Force through our cover lot, Trubus Soedarsono's Mustang P-51 D Cocor Merah. Commissioned by Leo Wattimena, who was an important gure in the Indonesian Air Force, this work embodies the signi cance of this iconic vehicle during the era.
Another important work in this auction is Dik Edi (lot #163), a rare teenage portrait of Prof. Dr. Edi Sedyawati, Indonesia’s Director General of Culture (1993-1999) who as a young girl in 1954 came across the painter and eventually became a model for his painting.
We would also like to highlight the fusion pieces by the late Abas Alibasjah (lots #020-022). While Alibasjah is well known for his oil paintings, he apparently made use of traditional batik method to express his surrealistic abstraction. Other interesting lots are abstract works by the late Nyoman Gunarsa who past away at the end of last year. In these formative early works, the artist incorporated traditional Balinese cultural elements into his modernist abstract paintings (lots #121-124).
Besides the works that hold historical signi cance, there are also a number of pieces that represent the artistic diversity of Indonesia’s modern art world. You will nd pieces by Indonesian modern abstract pioneer Ahmad Sadali: Latar Hitam dan Batang-batang Bersisa Emas (lot #164), Gumpalan Emas (lot #162), Doa Untuk Kedua Orang Tua (lot #155), Komposisi Bidang Emas (lot #154); and Popo Iskandar's gurative-expressive Rooster (lot #158), You will also nd one of Sudarso's Wanita Berkebaya Biru (lot #167), one of his ne signature portraits of women, in our auction.
Each of Soedibio’s pieces show different periods, interest and approaches: Working in the Rice Fields (lot #165) shows a rare work in which the artist depicts his gures quite realistically, Ancient Scripture (lot #125) is a typical Decorativist exploration of Indonesia's ancient written traditions as an artform, while Gunungan Wayang (lot #135) is his decorative-surrealistic take on the Javanese gunungan symbol of the universe in the Javanese wayang performance. Many other artworks of different genres, styles and periods of Indonesian art are featured in our auction, available for you to select and collect, according to your individual tastes.
Collecting art is not just a form of nancial investment - you are also taking part in appreciating our cultural treasures. We hope you enjoy our auction, and perhaps gain some insight of the Indonesian history through the beauty of art. Happy bidding!
